High Fructose Corn Syrup by any other name is still too sweet. (Apologies to Shakespeare)

Food manufacturers are hoping you won’t recognize a “new” product for what it is: The same old thing with a new name.

We all know that High Fructose Corn Syrup is terrible for you and even worse for kids. As that message has gone out far and wide, many parents and health-conscious adults have eliminated the stuff from their diets. In an effort to be able to keep using the cheap sweetener and preservative, food manufacterers have created a more concentrated variation they’re calling simply “fructose syrup.” This new variation has as much as DOUBLE (42% vs 90%) the concentration of fructose!

Many “light” foods use this new variation as they can increase the sweetness of food without using as much. Unfortunately, there’s NO safe amount, and increasing the concentration is certainly not going to make it safer or healthier!

Like many parenst, I get exhausted having to constantly check labels… but this is a fight worth continuing.
