Buffered C Tablets
1000 mg
Vitamin C, like B vitamins, is water soluble and found in a complex of other nutrients referred to as Bioflavonoids. Vitamin C is necessary for collagen synthesis (strengthens blood vessel walls, forms scar tissue, matrix for bone growth, skin and tendons). Vitamin C is an antioxidant, part of amino acid metabolism, strengthens the body's resistance to infection and helps in the absorption of iron. C is also important for producing thyroxine, the hormone responsible for regulating basal metabolic rate and body temperature. The deficiency disease of Vitamin C is called scurvy. When the body goes through periods of stress it can deplete vitamin C, which is used in the release of stress hormones from the adrenal gland.
Vitamin C is easily destroyed in our foods through exposure to heat, light and processing. Vitamin C is depleted from the body from smoking, alcohol use and diuretics like caffeine. The Recommended Dietary Allowance is 60mg/day for adults. This is specific to prevent scurvy. The upper limits have been established for Vitamin C at 2,000 mg for adults.
Vitamin C comes in many different combinations:
With Bioflavonoids : bioflavonoids are the compounds found in vitamin C containing foods that also have antioxidant benefits. Bioflavonoids help the blood vessels to be strong and elastic. This is beneficial to the entire body because it affects the large arteries to all the major parts of the body and the small capillaries in the eyes, brain, extremities and skin.
Buffered : This is when the vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is bound to a buffering agent, usually calcium (this does provide a small source of Calcium). It is referred to as calcium ascorbate. This is particularly beneficial to people who want to take high amounts of vitamin C. High amounts of vitamin C can cause stomach upset and/or diarrhea, these buffering agents will help prevent this.
Calcium Ascorbate is a non-acidic form of Vitamin C and is gentler on the stomach and teeth than non-buffered Vitamin C.
Suggested Use: As a dietary supplement, adults take one (1) tablet, or as directed by a health care professional. Store in a cool, dry place and away from direct light.
Keep out of reach of children.
