Move More, Think Faster!

Most people think getting in shape is just about your heart, body, or swimsuit season. While those are fine reasons to exercise, they miss another of the best side-effects of exercise: boosting brainpower!

That's right! Improving cardiorespiratory fitness helps the brain work more efficiently.

That’s the basic idea behind the “hidden brain benefit” of exercise. When your heart and lungs get better at moving oxygen-rich blood around the body, your brain gets a more reliable fuel supply too, which can support clearer thinking and smoother mental performance.

Despite being only about 2% of your bodyweight, your brain uses a lot of energy - 20%, in fact! It relies on steady blood flow to work well. When your cardiorespiratory fitness improves, your brain doesn’t have to work as hard to get things done because your body’s delivery systems are working better.

One study with older adults found that just one year of aerobic exercise can boost cardiorespiratory fitness, increase blood flow to the brain, and is linked to better memory, brain structure, thinking skills, and mood.

And this isn't just a vague “exercise is good for the brain”  wellness-poster kind of claim. A fitter cardiovascular system helps the brain operate more efficiently by improving oxygen-rich blood delivery, reducing inflammation, and increasing neuroplasticity.  A 2025 review of exercise and neuroprotection sums it up well:

"Getting fitter creates a brain environment that works better with less strain."

You don’t have to be an endurance athlete to see these benefits. Regular aerobic exercise, as little as a brisk walk, is enough to improve cardiorespiratory fitness. So if you’ve noticed that a walk, run, bike ride, or swim leaves you feeling more clear-headed, it could be because your brain enjoys getting more oxygen.

Don’t just train for your body. Train for your brain to run sharper, smoother, and stronger. Fitness fuels the mind!
